4.0 Branding and Out of Scope Designs

Next week is the deadline for submitting 4.0 branding proposals.
We'll be discussing the proposals and making a decision at our next IRC
chat [1] (feel free to tune in) and if you want to express
satisfaction/dissatisfaction with any of them before the decision, write us
a message on our mailing list, as outlined on our wiki [2]. (If you have
trouble with that, drop us a note in the comments and we'll help.)

Unfortunately, many of the proposals submitted are out of scope, which
eliminates them from the running. If you're one of the designers, here are
the problems so you can fix them:
- Aexyn.com: logo not featured correctly [3], progress indicator can only
be modified as outlined at [4]
- UriHerrera: proposal doesn't follow branding guidelines [3] (incorrect
use of logo, non-brand colors)
- Javier Antonio Nisa Ávila: logo not featured correctly [3]
- k-j: logo not featured correctly [3], features an additional "Get
involved" button
- Medieval: second proposal uses the logo incorrectly [3]
- Pedro: logo not featured correctly [3]
- Mateus.m.luna: non-brand colors [3]
- Alexander Wilms: non-brand colors, incorrect logo use [3], progress
indicator can't be modified this way [4], start screen can't be modified
this way (it's past UI freeze)
- Harvey Cabaguio: not on the wiki yet

Re: 4.0 Branding and Out of Scope Designs

Hi Mirek,

sorry for not being able to attend the chat, next week I'll probably be
there.

Why wouldn't changed colors and logo be allowed? Isn't that kind of the
point of a rebranding?

Alex

I think it's somewhere in between the two: you have a certain latitude
with colours, but they still have to be roughly the same, otherwise it
would end up going straight to the BoD, which would probably end up
organizing... a vote. So I'd say that as long as it's green(ish),
gray(ish) and has a bit of white(ish) it should fly. But no red - blue -
yellow stuff. At least that might start quite a few discussions you
don't want to be the subject of :-)

Best,
Charles.

We only wanted to refresh our splash, about screen, and start screen in the
same way we did with 3.6.
A complete rebranding, along with colors and logo change, would have to be
thoroughly discussed with every team and accepted by everyone, and we don't
have the time for that now.

Not yet.
All three of the splashes are in the "Wrong position", as the text "The
Document Foundation" isn't shown along with the logo -- to fix this, use
the logo as provided in the "Logo resources for official representation"
section.
The third splash doesn't use our actual logo.

Re: 4.0 Branding and Out of Scope Designs

Hi all,

sorry for interfering - I am not design specialist, but I wanted to share
my opinions about Javier's splashes. For me, we should stay more with our
old branding [1].

>From your three splashes, I would choose the second one, but I would prefer
something more similar to 3.6 splashes - something like old 3.6 splash with
white, normal "4" at right of the standard logo.

I think it is important to keep our old branding, but also we have to emphasize
new 4.0 version.

Greetings,
Paweł

Have you taken a look at the other proposals [1]? Are there any at all that
you like?
(I myself really like Mateus's proposals.)

Re: 4.0 Branding and Out of Scope Designs

Hi,

Mirek, thank you for sharing with me 4.0 branding site. I've just saw it
and... only Mateus.m.luna's projects are the best for me.
These exactly:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Clear_Full_Pref.png
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Clear_Green_Pref.png

Alexander Wilms's project is also good and quite interesting, but I don't
like this big space at the right of menu - too minimal and not space
proportional.

To sum up, I would prefer only Mateus.m.luna's projects. It is only my
opinion.

PS: Are there any file type icons changes? Splash/menu may not match with
old icons.

Greetings,
Paweł

Re: 4.0 Branding and Out of Scope Designs

My personal feeling is that Alexander 's work looks really professionnal and nice. Matus's design has interesting aspects but there's something that looks just unfinished and indeed "childish' for a lack of a better word: is that the choice of primary colours and simple shapes maybe? Obviously Matus' work is finished but I just prefer Alex's designs.

N.B. These are my views only and not the ones of the BoD.

Best,

Charles.

Well, the simple shapes and colors were what we called for -- it's a
characteristic of Swiss design. We chose to go with Swiss style, as it
represents simplicity and celebrates typography.
The choice of colors is greatly restricted by the guidelines [1], so we
can't blame Mateus for that either. (BTW, his previous proposal [2]
proposed different colors.)

Alex's designs don't actually follow these guidelines, and the designs will
have to be changed if we want to consider them (as we've posted on the ml,
g+, and fb).

Re: 4.0 Branding and Out of Scope Designs

Hi,

but what can you say about so many unused space around "Open File" and
"From Template" buttons? For me it dazzles!
Seriously, I've never used "Open File" button via start center (sometimes
via Writer), "From Template" button I had used maybe few times to check
templates.

For me, Writer, Calc etc. buttons should be centered - they are the most
used, in my opinion. Alex's design is good and nice looking, but - in my
opinion - not practical.

Hope you understand me.

Greetings,
Paweł

Actually, flat design and Swiss style are both very contemporary, at least
in application design.
They're a cornerstone of Android application design, of Microsoft's Modern
Windows UI (or whatever it's called now), of Google's and Facebook's web
application design, and they're appearing in more and more places (e.g.
Vimeo, Kickstarter, Smashing Magazine, ...).

That said, the problem with Alex's proposal isn't Swiss-related.
The problem is that he doesn't follow the design guidelines (and that his
progress indicator and Start screen can't be implemented as proposed), with
the biggest problem being that the proposal doesn't use any shade of
LibreOffice's green.

The fact that the start screen is not ideal (and I totally agree with that)
> doesn't mean too much. We could ask alex, to re-work the start-center if

>

We have (via a public mailing list, G+, and FB post).
The truth is, we're really running out of time here, and when/if we pick a
proposal, it must be at least nearly in shipping state.

Maybe we should change the wiki page to show which proposals are "In
scope", can get "In scope" with a minimum of work, are completely "Out
of scope".

So we won't discuss about "Out scope".

Done a change.

It seems to be interesting that none of the proposals uses the motif in
any way [3].

I still think the "Get involved" text looks a lot like a button, as it has
an icon and it's inviting you to take an action, but that's just a personal
