Comments removed when savin .docx

Hello,
I am running LibreOffice Writer 3.4.4 in Mac OS X 10.6.8. I have been
collaborating with other researchers who use Micro$oft Word on some
abstracts and papers we plan to publish.
However, I notice that any comments I add to a .docx document via
LibreOffice Writer do not show up when opened in Micro$oft Word 2007,
2010, or 2011!
Is this a known bug, or am I not doing it correctly?
Thanks!

I believe this is a known bug
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33463).  It seems that
Libreoffice does not save comment when exporting (saving) to docx
format (other formats seem OK).  As a workaround, you could consider
saving to a different format, like odt.  Word 2007 and later supports
odf version 1.1, as far as I know.  Alternatively, you could also use
the legacy doc format, which is more supported than docx.

>From the bug report, it seems that a fix will be coming for this bug,
but I cannot say for sure.  If you have any valuable information to
contribute to the bug report, feel free to post a comment.

Regards
Stephan

Re: Comments removed when savin .docx

Ok, thanks for the info. I will study the bug report to see if there's anything I need to add.
docx (and xlsx and pptx) support is so important!! Really hope full support will be implemented very soon.
Unfortunately I'm not a programmer, but please let me know if there's other ways for me to help with improving LibreOffice!

There is a strong need for compatibility but the problem is that MSOX
formats must be reversed engineered because they are proprietary
formats. They happen to be similar to ODF formats but have several
unique MS modifications. This causes problems for others, not just LO,
to have absolute full compatibility with MSOX.

Hi :)
Full docX support, as specified by the ISO standard, is apparently already the way LibreOffice supports docX.  The problem is usually that MS Office doesn't use the ISO spec so we have to work out how to adjust LO to be as quirky as MS Office.  Of course LO probably does have it's own quirks and bugs and those are hopefully being worked on to bring them in line with MSO practicalities rather than the idealised spec.

I think there is an MS Office 2007 and a 2010 but afaik not a 2011 unless it's on Mac.  The MS Office 2008 is only for Macs and is really just 2007 with a different name to make it sound more advanced.  I heard a rumour that it was MSO 2003 with just the gui hacked around to give it the ribbon but rumours like that are not worth trusting.
Regards from
Tom :)

Re: Comments removed when savin .docx

Hi :)
I think a few people would disagree!  MS's OOXML format is officially an "Open" format defined by an ISO standards.  Of course in practice these things are difficult to get exactly right so people have to keep buying the newer MS Office in order to use the newer set of quirks where things don't quite work as per the specs.

Some people might be experiencing deja vu as this is allegedly roughly what happened with the Rtf format except that Rtf was never the main format used by MS and was only meant as a format to allow interoperability with non-MS programs.  It was only the default in Wordpad.

Tom :)

I think a bug report 43545 may cover this. You might check the xml
portion of the MSO file to see if the comments are there but not being
displayed. The docx format is a zip format and can be extracted using
zip tools - I do not know which ones are used on a Mac. You will see and
xml file which is the main text body.
