[PATCH] Start Impress without the wizard by default

Hi,

this one-liner should prevent the Impress Wizard from getting started
automatically.
The assistant should now only appear if File -> Wizards -> Presentation
is used.

This really is going to want UX-advise advice I think :-)

        I -suspect- that they'll want a check-box to have this re-enabled
somewhere in the UI, and/or even to leave that thing on by default [ but
most Linux / SUSE products will just turn it off by default as an
annoyance ;-].

        But perhaps I'm wrong :-)

        HTH,

                Michael.

Compared to the current situation, where also File > New > Presentation
start the Wizard.
(Whereas both Ctr-N and File > New > Templates and Documents ..
<template> do not use the Wizard.)

We do have " Tools > Options > Impress > General ... > New document ..
start with Wizard " to turn of the wizard all together.
That should do it ..?

Cheers,
Cor

Hi everyone,

Hm... Cor was quicker.

I agree.

This be a vote for not showing the wizard by default, since most/all
of the things that can be done with the wizard can just as easily be
done inside the Tasks pane.

Astron.

Right, just changing that default would be easier. Tim - the best way
(or at least what I'd do) to find that is to cp -a your
~/.config/libreoffice to somewhere else; change the setting, exit, then
diff -ur on the files, perhaps xmlint --format them, and diff -u again -
then hack the default setting in officecfg.

Any chance you can tweak your patch to that ?

Cor - you didn't tell us if you thought this was a good default; so far
Astron agrees, and Tim of course ;-)

        Thanks,

                Michael.

The Wizard is extremely helpful, when you want to have it.
So yes, I support a change in behaviour.
Either turning the default off, or the change as initially proposed are
OK for me (sorry, that I cannot be more distinctive here ;-) )

If one wants to go a bit further, I'd suggest to (if possible) move the
wizard to the "Templates and Documents" handling. Basically, the core of
the wizard seems to be to select proper master pages and to generate a
basic structure.

That would mean:

      * Application Menu "File -- Wizard": Remove the entry
"Presentation..." -> Rationale: It is a mixture of different
kinds of wizards. And, only few people seem to use them (from my
        experience on former user lists).

      * Dialog "Templates and Documents" --> Rationale: As said, it lets
the user select master pages and structure. At the moment, its
unclear to me how this dialog works and whether the presentation
        dialog can easily be added.

      * Presentation Wizard: Remove page 1 (so skip the blank
presentation, the open presentation thing) --> Rationale: Remove
clutter, especially since most of the stuff is already done by
the Start Center / other menus.

      * Option: Maybe, remove the option Cor mentioned. But maybe wait
one release to wait for some "enlightening" feedback by our
        users ;-)))

>From my point of view, it could help to reduce the clutter.

+1 ... good thing :-)

Cheers,
Christoph

sure, that should be it.

[PUSHED] Start Impress without the wizard by default

Thanks for that; pushed - we should add to the 3.5 release notes in the
wiki with a note on how to turn it on again (for masochists) ;-)

The UI advise feedback was uniformly in favour of turning it off by
default (with some good other suggestions too).

        Thanks,

                Michael.
