Read-only "fields"

Hi all,

I've Googled and also searched the mailing list archives but can't find a
solution to this that works for me.

Opened a word document and saved (copy) as odt. I'm heavily editing the
file and have come across a couple of 'fields' in the footer that I can't
edit or delete. Attempting to delete, or delete the text, results in a
pop-up saying that you can't delete read-only portions of the document.

These were originally fields in the word document. Showing 'field names'
in LibreOffice doesn't show any names for these 2 fields. I know one of
them was referencing a cell in a table on the 1st page - something we have
not been able to replicate in OO in the past. They're obviously fields
that OO/LO can't deal with. I'm not concerned about being able to
replicate the field - I'm happy to simply delete the field and hard-code
the text, but I can't even do that!?!

Any ideas on how to remove these 'read-only' fields?

TIA
Regards,

If might try editing the odt file instead of the doc file.

I am editing the odt. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

I ran across this the other day but with OpenOffice. assuming the same
fix, you have to go to the 'section' under 'format' and turn off
'write protection' and maybe turn on 'editable in read-only document'.

sorry if this doesn't apply to LO but hope this might yield a clue.

(I am having trouble installing LO and cannot afford too much foolin'
around with the system until I get back from abroad.)

'Format->Sections' isn't enabled in this document.

Thanks anyway.

Surely someone else has had this problem???

Solved this by doing the following:

created a temporary, empty directory 'A'
used command 'unzip' to extract the odt file into the new directory 'A'
used text editor to open the extracted file 'settings.xml'
found the element 'ProtectForm' and changed to:

<config:config-item config:name="ProtectForm"
config:type="boolean">false</config:config-item>

saved changes and created new document with command:

zip -r ../newdocument.odt *

(whilst in directory 'A').
