hide white space

Not having this feature is the main reason I don't switch wholesale to LO. Is a "hide white space" feature in the works for Writer?

Can you please explain what this means?  Where is it used?  How is it
used?  I have never hear of such a feature.

Re: hide white space

A quick Google search provides the answer

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/show-or-hide-white-space-in-print-layout-view-HP003072013.aspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297564

Does anyone know if this feature exists in LO? If not a feature request could be added ;)

Would be a surprise if there is not a feature request already. At least
in the old OOo domain ;-)
IIRC, people are advised to use Web layout for this - apparently -
mission critical feature.

It seems that, indeed, the issue has already been raised and discussed in the OOO.org past, but not solved:

http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=61615

http://openoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=8006

I
don't know of any feature that would yield this precise effect in LO
-- please correct me anyone if I am out of date on this -- but as a
temporary workaround it is possible create a page style with zero-sized
headers and margins. I know it is far from perfect given that it would
have an effect on formatting (even though easily and instantly reversible) instead of being only a
view mode change, but at least that would provide the desired "look and
feel (better than the web layout).

Doesn't the paragraph symbol in the tool bar do this? It shows
non-printing characters: space, 'hard' return, 'soft' return, tab, etc.
This is can be activated by control-F10, or from the menu as View >
Nonprinting characters.

Warmest Regards

No, it does not. Loot at the link provided.

Re: hide white space

Sorry to start a thread and then not check in for a bit...

Just to clarify, this is a feature in Word that closes up the white space at the bottom/top of pages. Instead of seeing "white space" in the margin at the bottom of a page, and the "white space" in the top margin of the following page, you just see a line. That makes the text at the bottom of the first page almost contiguous with the text at the top of the next page.

Since I work primarily on long documents, and since screen space is often at a premium, this is a really handy feature for reading and editing. It allows you to see 8-10 lines of text that you'd otherwise have to scroll down to see.

This was a major topic on one of the old OOo lists...including some vitriol and some speculation that LO would address this issue much quicker than the OOo. The issue seems to have gone largely ignored on OOo in spite of the fact that there seems to be rather widespread support for the feature.

I appreciate the comments...just wondering if anyone knows if this feature has been addressed in LO in either of the new releases? Or perhaps for a future one?

Re: hide white space

Hi :)
Please could you post this as a wish-list item?
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport
I think the LibreOffice devs do look at bug-reports and stuff posted against
OpenOffice but it's better to post again for LibreOffice to make sure that it's
known this still an issue and still wanted for LibreOffice.

When you post it please add the url addresses of the stuff posted against
OpenOffice so that people can see the state of play with OOo.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Is there an "official" procedure for when there's already an OOo bug
report?

The wiki page you linked suggests adding references to existing OOo
bugs, so I guess we should always fill a new bug at freedesktop.org?

Re: hide white space

Hi :)
I don't know if there is an official policy about this.  The devs list probably
have the best ideas but i wouldn't have noticed if they have drafted a policy or
guidance about it.  Ideally something would be done roughly and then sent to the
Documentation Team to get tidied-up i guess but i haven't noticed anything there
yet.  I think both the devs and the documentation teams are very busy right now
but when things slow down a bit they might get a chance to settle this sort of
thing.
Regards from
Tom :)

There is an issue for this one:
